CILTER Newsletter 1(14) is published
Dear IELLI Staff and Students, and Friends of CILTER,
As the new academic year settles in, I hope everyone is easing smoothly into their teaching, research, and study routines. It’s wonderful to see the IELLI and CILTER communities buzzing again with ideas and collaboration.
This issue brings together a fantastic mix of opportunities, publications, and examples of research in action. One highlight is the launch of RIPPLE (Research in Practice Partnership for Language Education). RIPPLE is a pilot initiative that connects researchers with English language teachers in Japan to explore classroom questions collaboratively. The project, co-led by Sho Kato and myself, offers a unique space for mutual learning between academics and practitioners. It’s an exciting step toward bridging research and practice, and I encourage anyone interested in real-world educational impact to get involved.
We’re also thrilled to share the first issue of the St Andrews Journal of International and Language Education (SAJILE), an open-access journal co-run by IELLI students and staff. SAJILE embodies our collective mission to make research accessible, developmental, and inclusive.
This issue also showcases a range of inspiring scholarship:
- Heather Jeffrey’s collaboration with Missy McLaren in the Technology Enhanced Learning Division — a wonderful illustration of “research in action”.
- Dr Blair Matthews’ article on authenticity and digital lifeworlds in Journal of Responsible Technology.
- Zainab Teraif’s new piece on generative AI in Innovation in Language Learning and Teaching.
- Dr Sarah Hopkyns’ busy month of presentations at BAAL 2025 and NYU Abu Dhabi.
In the spirit of lifelong learning, don’t miss the opportunity to access Nature Masterclasses On-demand, available free to all University of St Andrews staff and students for one year. It’s a brilliant professional development resource for those looking to hone their research writing and communication skills. There are also other recommended resources under the “IELLI Bookshelf” section on students’ digital learning experience, language education, and postgraduate supervision that you will find useful.
Here’s to a productive and inspiring start to the new term.
Best regards,
Sin-Wang
